The Giants continue in their quest to keep the team from last year intact. They signed Santiago Casilla to a 3 year, $15 million contract. He will make $4.5 million in 2013 and 2014, then $5 million in 2015. There is also a club vesting option for 2016, and if it doesn’t vest he will get a $1 million buyout. This means we will have Santiago on the team at least 2 years into his free agency. The Giants are definitely making a commitment to the players that have served them well these past few years. So glad he’ll be on the team for a while. He did such a fantastic job covering for Brian Wilson at the beginning of the season, and he was stellar during the post season. Plus what would I do if I couldn’t make comments about “The Boogey Man”?? Congrats, Santiago!
So who’s left on the Giants list to tie up for next year? I’ve heard a rumor that the Giants aren’t interested in resigning Guillermo Mota. You would think if they were it would have happened by now. Not sure why – possibly to save some money to spend elsewhere on the team. Xavier Nady, the left-fielder latecomer last season, won’t be back as he was just signed to a minor league contract by the Royals. Still haven’t heard anything definite about Freddy Sanchez, but I’m assuming he won’t be back next season because he’s too much of a risk with his injuries. Another guy I haven’t heard anything about is Ryan “Creative Dresser” Theriot. I would think the Giants would want him back as a backup for the infield because he really did a great job last season at second base as well as offensively. Maybe he’s waiting to see what other offers he gets before he decides. And then of course there’s Brian Wilson. I’m hoping something gets done on that front soon so that the relief staff will know if they have to platoon at closer again next season.
In other news, Brandon Crawford’s wife, Jalynne, delivered their first child (a daughter) yesterday. Her name is Braylyn Ann Crawford. I would guess her name is a combination of the two of her parents’ names. So cute! Ginny thinks she looks like Brandon. Congrats on becoming a great-grandmother, Ginny! And congrats to the Crawfords on their new little bundle of joy. We’ll have to see if the nickname “Crawdad” sticks!
I’ll keep you posted if there is any more signing news (or baby news for that matter). Until next time, GO GIANTS!!
