My Boys Visit the Big Guy – Again

So glad I have some happiness to report on today.  The Giants finally got to visit the White House yesterday to celebrate their 2012 World Series win with the President.  That must have been such a welcome joy after how the season’s been going.  So happy Buster got to be there this time – apparently he was in awe of the President and all of his responsibilities and really appreciated the opportunity to meet him.  Love that kid!  What a thrill for the boys when President Obama mentioned that Timmy, Matt, Buster, and Pablo should be added to such historic names as Mays, McCovey, and Perry in Giants history.  Of course, there had to be a comment about Timmy’s hair – he said he didn’t recognize him.  The President even commented on how they are a “second half team” and how he expected them to come back.  Wouldn’t that be nice?  Here are some pics of the visit, and here’s the video.  Don’t the boys look gorgeous all dressed up?  Javier Lopez looks like a male model!

There have been several roster moves since I last posted.  Yusmeiro Petit was placed on the roster on July 23rd from Fresno.  He was a key player in the first game of the double header, pitching 5 1/3 innings after Eric Surkamp was taken out early.  He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits with 7 strike outs.  Not too shabby.  They ended up losing that game, but he was key in saving the bullpen during that 4 game series.  He was then designated for assignment on July 28th.  Thanks for the help, Yusmeiro!

Petit was replaced with right-handed pitcher Guillermo Moscoso.  He was acquired from the Cubs for cash or a player to be named (this term always cracks me up – the player with no name!).  He provides some badly needed starting pitching depth, as Mike Kickham hasn’t really worked out.  He joined the club at the right time, as he hasn’t even played in a game yet but he got to go to the White House with the rest of the team!

In other moves, Jake Dunning has gone back to Fresno (love that kid), Joaquin Arias has come back from his emergency appendectomy surgery (we need him badly), Tony Abreu has been placed on the 15-day DL (left knee injury), Kensuke Tanaka was optioned back to Fresno (Aw!  I love that guy!  And he doesn’t spit!), and most recently, 1st baseman Brett Pill and right fielder Roger Kieschnick were added to the roster.  I’m assuming Pill will be platooning with Brandon Belt as he’s had some struggles recently (Pill is in tonight’s lineup at 1st base), and Kieschnick will take Tanaka’s place.  Kieschnick will be making his major league debut.  He was hitting .273 with 13 home runs, nine triples, and 27 doubles in Fresno.  Welcome to the big leagues, Kid!  Will be interesting to see what other changes are made as the season winds down, especially with that trade deadline looming tomorrow.  Bochy will probably try all sorts of different combinations to get out of this slump.  Lots of rumors swarming about possible trades for Hunter, Javier, Sergio, and Timmy.  Will update you as news breaks.

Did anyone notice the crooked batter’s boxes at the game vs. the Reds last Wednesday?  I was listening to the game on the radio as I was driving home from work, and it was driving the announcers crazy.  Here’s a picture.  I’m surprised no one complained and had them redo them.  I couldn’t find any rule on what to do in this situation, but there is a rule that states the batter must remain in the batter’s box while batting, so I guess the crookedness could have thrown some guys out of whack.  However, considering there were a total of 28 hits in that game, I guess this wasn’t an issue.

There’s a new Giants commercial out that’s fabulous!  I saw it during last Friday’s game.  Sergio Romo and Brandon Belt go back and forth acting like salesmen.  It is so funny.  At one point, they both do their best Elvis impersonations, jumpsuits included!  Couldn’t find it on the internet yet, but will post it when I can.

I have a new spit count for you from last week.  Here you go:

July 26th

Giants:

–          Belt 7

–          Sandoval 6

–          Romo 6

–          Cain 3

–          Posey 3

–          Francoeur 3

–          Abreu 1

–          Arias 1

–          Bochy 1

Cubs:

–          Castillo 14

–          Castro 7

–          ? 3 (one of the coaches)

–          Navarro 3

–          Valbuena 2

–          Guerrier 2

–          Gregg 2

–          Lake 1

–          Barney 1

–          Jackson 1

–          Russell 1

–          DeJesus 1

–          Schierholtz 1

Misc.:

–          Umpire 3

Game Spit Master General = Castillo at 14

Giants Game Spit Master General = Belt at 7

That’s a total of 73 spits during a 3 hour and 15 minute game for an average of 1 spit every 2.7 minutes.

I think that’s the first time Brandon Belt has earned the Spit Master General title ever.  Guess blowing a key play induces spit production.  Of note during this game – they were showing ads for Grinds coffee pouches, a replacement for tobacco pouches.  That brought one moment of joy for me during that otherwise depressing game.  Hope they keep that up and some of the boys take notice.

It’s been so hard to stay positive with this team lately.  While doing that spit count Friday night, I swear my blood pressure rose to an unhealthy level in that ninth inning when they blew their 2-1 lead with Belt’s error at 1st base.  Luckily for my health I wasn’t able to watch the games on Saturday and Sunday – both equally as tragic.  But we gotta hang in there, right?  We’re true fans, and we have to keep the faith that they can somehow turn this around.  My goal until the end of the season is to try and be as positive as possible.  Hope the boys can do that as well.  We start the series in Philly tonight.  Hope that the White House trip will spark something and get those badly needed bats going.  And not just the bats – KEY bats, like with the bases loaded.  Will be watching tonight, cheering the boys on.  Do it, Guys!  We have faith!  GO GIANTS!!  Give us a Philly-Buster!
